New Features in DVD Studio Pro 4.2

DVD Studio Pro 4.2 adds several new features. For the latest information about this release, choose Help > Release Notes.

Support for Soundtrack Pro Audio File Projects

DVD Studio Pro now supports importing two-channelSoundtrack Pro audio file projects (STAP files).

Note: If you import a STAP file that includes more than two channels, DVD Studio Pro only uses the left and right channels.

Supporting Soundtrack Pro audio file projects makes it easy to take advantage of the powerful features of the Soundtrack Pro Waveform Editor to nondestructively modify the original audio source file.

You can import and use STAP files in your DVD Studio Pro projects like any other audio files. When you need to make a change to a STAP file, it will open in Soundtrack Pro. Once you save the project in Soundtrack Pro, it will automatically update in

DVD Studio Pro.

To make a change to a STAP file from a DVD Studio Pro project:

1Do one of the following to open the STAP file in Soundtrack Pro:

ÂSelect the file in the Assets tab, then choose File > Asset > Open In Editor.

ÂControl-clickthe file in the Assets tab, then choose Open In Editor from the shortcut menu.

Soundtrack Pro opens with this STAP file in its Waveform Editor.

2 Make the needed changes to the STAP file in Soundtrack Pro and save the project.

3Switch back to DVD Studio Pro.

The Asset Refresh dialog appears letting you know that the STAP file has changed. You can click Show Log in the dialog to see a list of elements that use this file.

Native Support for Additional H.264 Formats

DVD Studio Pro can now natively import additional H.264 high definition (HD) video formats. These assets are not reencoded using the embedded MPEG encoder.

The specific formats supported are:

Â720p at 23.98 fps and 720p at 29.97 fps: You can now import H.264 assets with these frame rates into NTSC HD projects. DVD Studio Pro adds frame-doubling flags during the compile process to make them conform to the HD DVD specification.

Note: 720p at 59.94 fps H.264 assets were already supported in NTSC HD projects.

Important: 720p at 24 fps (not 23.98 fps) and 30 fps (not 29.97 fps) are not native and will be encoded. Additionally, 720p at 23.98 fps and 720p at 29.97 fps HDV formats are not native and will be encoded.

Â720p at 25 fps: You can now import H.264 assets with this frame rate into PAL HD projects. DVD Studio Pro addsframe-doublingflags during the compile process to make them conform to the HD DVD specification.

Note: 720p at 50 fps H.264 assets were already supported in PAL HD projects.

Important: The 720p at 25 fps HDV format is not native and will be encoded.

About “Native” Support

You can import a wide variety of video formats and frame rates into a DVD Studio Pro project.

ÂIf the asset is natively supported, such as those listed above, it will be used as it is and will immediately show a green dot in the Status column of the Assets tab (although there may be a short period where the asset is being parsed, as indicated by a “P” next to the progress bar in the Status column).

ÂIf the asset is not natively supported, such as a 25 fps asset in an NTSC project, it will be encoded to a natively supported format. The Status column will either show a yellow dot, indicating that it needs to be encoded, or will show an “E” next to the Status column’s progress bar if it is being currently encoded (depending on whether background encoding is selected in DVD Studio Pro Preferences).

Another way to tell if an asset is natively supported by DVD Studio Pro is to Control-clickit in the Assets tab and see if the Encoder Settings item is dimmed (indicating that it is native).

Important: While DVD Studio Pro can transcode manynon-nativeassets into compliant formats, you can often achieve better results by using Compressor. Compressor includes a variety of features, including Frame Controls and filters, that allow you to get the best results possible for the transcoded assets.

Create Support Profile Added to Help Menu

DVD Studio Pro now includes a Create Support Profile item in the Help menu. This can be used to provide computer information if you contact AppleCare about an issue you are having.

Note: Usually you will not use Create Support Profile unless an AppleCare representative has asked you to.

Default Content Locations Have Moved

To streamline the content used by the Final Cut Studio applications, the default content locations have moved to a more centralized location. DVD Studio Pro supplied content, including the templates, are now located at /Library/Application Support/

Final Cut Studio/DVD Studio Pro/.

Unless you specify a custom location for the DVD Studio Pro supplied content, the Final Cut Studio installer automatically moves the current DVD Studio Pro supplied content to this new location.

Note: This does not affect any custom content you have created or imported into previous versions of DVD Studio Pro. Additionally, If you had specified a custom location for the DVD Studio Pro supplied content with a previous installation, the content is not moved to the new location.

Important: Any projects created with previous versions of DVD Studio Pro that use any of the DVD Studio Pro supplied content show the Missing Files dialog when you open them. You can use the Missing Files dialog to locate the moved content in its newlocation—onceyou locate one of the files, DVD Studio Pro automatically finds all of the other missing files and the project opens.

DVD Studio Pro

DVD Studio Pro was a high-end software tool published by Apple Inc. to allow users to create DVD masters to be sent out for replication at production houses. Its tight integration with other Apple applications allows users to take Final Cut Pro and Motion projects and render them into the DVD format without encoding to intermediary formats. This streamlines the production workflow and reduces overhead. It was discontinued with the release of Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4.

Apple bought Astarte's DVDirector in 2000, re-releasing it as DVD Studio Pro in 2001. Version 1.5, still based on this original code, was released in April 2002. In the meantime Apple had acquired Spruce Technologies in 2001, and was busy retooling the DVD authoring package that came with that acquisition (DVD Maestro), and in August 2003, Apple released DVD Studio Pro 2. This new version was basically a completely new application, with a totally new interface. Since then, the program has grown to be the primary midrange software DVD creation package, Sonic Scenarist being the worldwide industry standard for professional DVD authoring.

In April 2005, Apple updated DVD Studio Pro to support authoring HD content. DVD Studio Pro 4 allows for the burning of HD DVD content to both standard DVDs and HD DVD media (even though no HD DVD burners were currently available for Macintosh). For playing back HD DVD content burnt to a standard DVD, Apple requires a PowerPC G5, Apple DVD Player v4.6, and Mac OS X v10.4 or later. This was also the first version that did not include support for Mac OS 9.

In January 2006 Apple stopped offering DVD Studio Pro as a stand-alone product, only selling it as part of the Final Cut Studio suite. The 4.0.3 update, released in the same month, upgrades the program to the finalized HD DVD 1.0 specification. It also supports the native H.264 specification. The 4.2 update, which shipped with the Final Cut Studio 2 release, was simply a compatibility update and did not add any major new features.

See also a release history in context with the rest of Final Cut Studio.

DVD Studio Pro has a graphical 'map' view, which shows all the menus, tracks and scripts in the project as color-coded tiles, with the connections between them as arrows. New menus, layered menus, scripts and slideshows can be created from this view and arranged; and the item that will play first on the DVD can be set. Assets (i.e. photos, sounds and Motion projects) are imported into the asset manager and can then be dragged and dropped into one or more places within the project (creating a link to the asset rather than duplicating it). Menus can be created with templates, or pre-made buttons, and with the help of dynamic guidelines they can be kept in a grid arrangement.

Other features include:

  • Subtitle creation
  • Implementation of CSS and Macrovision copy protection for SD DVD's
  • Editing of GPRM and SPRM registers
  • Disabling certain functions on particular menus
  • Creating multiple language versions of a menu
  • Creating multiple versions ('stories') of a video project for example, a director's cut
  • [email protected] feature for web links in menus
  • A range of transition effects to set between menus.

The video project is typically sent from Final Cut Pro to Compressor, where it can be converted into the DVD MPEG-2 format with Dolby Digital (ac3) or AIFF sound. Menus with motion graphics can be created in Motion. It is possible to set the menu's loop point in either Motion or DVD Studio Pro; likewise it is possible to define chapters within either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro. The menus and the encoded video assets are imported into the application and the menu system is constructed; afterwards it can be simulated in a mock DVD player interface. The final VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS directory for the DVD can be created using the 'Build' feature. The 'Format' function takes this directory and writes it to a disc or disk image. Alternatively, a sample DVD can be burnt to disc in one step.

DVD Studio Pro

В Final Cut:

DVD Studio Pro.

Import Marker List..”
