Visual studio community edition 2017

Install on low bandwidth or unreliable network environments

We recommend that you try the Visual Studio web installer—we think you'll find it a good experience for most situations.

However, if your internet connection is unavailable or unreliable, you can use the command line to create a local cache of the files you need to complete an offline install. Here's how.

Step 1 - Download the Visual Studio bootstrapper

Start by downloading the Visual Studio bootstrapper for your chosen edition of Visual Studio.

Your setup file—or to be more specific, a bootstrapper file—will match or be similar to one of the following.

Step 2 - Create a local install cache

You must have an internet connection to complete this step. To create a local layout, open a command prompt and use one of the commands from the following examples: The examples here assume that you're using the Community edition of Visual Studio; adjust the command as appropriate for your edition.

  • For .NET web and .NET desktop development, run:

    vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017layout --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NetWeb --add Component.GitHub.VisualStudio --includeOptional --lang en-US

  • For .NET desktop and Office development, run:

    vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017layout --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Office --includeOptional --lang en-US

  • For C++ desktop development, run:

    vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017layout --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop --includeRecommended --lang en-US

  • To create a complete local layout with all features (this will take a long time—we have lots of features!), run:

    vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017layout --lang en-US

If you want to install a language other than English, change en-US to a locale from the list at the bottom of this page. Use this list of the components and workloads available to further customize your installation cache as necessary.

Step 3 - Install Visual Studio from the local cache

Tip

When you run from a local install cache, setup uses the local versions of each of these files. But if you select components during installation that aren't in the cache, we attempt to download them from the internet.

To ensure that you only install the files you've downloaded, use the same command-line options that you used to create the layout cache. For example, if you created a layout cache with the following command:

vs_community.exe --layout c:\vs2017layout --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NetWeb --add Component.GitHub.VisualStudio --includeOptional --lang en-US

use this command to run the installation:

c:\vs2017layout\vs_community.exe --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NetWeb --add Component.GitHub.VisualStudio --includeOptional

Note

If you get an error that a signature is invalid, you must install updated certificates. Open the Certificates folder in your offline cache. Double-click each of the certificate files, and then click through the Certificate Manager wizard. If asked for a password, leave it blank.

List of language locales

Install Visual Studio 2017 | Microsoft Docs

Welcome to a new way to install Visual Studio! In our newest version, we've made it easier for you to select and install just the features you need. We've also reduced the minimum footprint of Visual Studio so that it installs more quickly and with less system impact than ever before.

Want to know more about what else is new in this version? See our release notes.

Ready to install? We'll walk you through it, step-by-step.

Step 1 - Make sure your computer is ready for Visual Studio

Before you begin installing Visual Studio:

  1. Check the system requirements. These requirements help you know whether your computer supports Visual Studio 2017.
  2. Apply the latest Windows updates. These updates ensure that your computer has both the latest security updates and the required system components for Visual Studio.
  3. Reboot. The reboot ensures that any pending installs or updates don't hinder the Visual Studio install.
  4. Free up space. Remove unneeded files and applications from your %SystemDrive% by, for example, running the Disk Cleanup app.

For questions about running previous versions of Visual Studio side by side with Visual Studio 2017, see the Visual Studio compatibility details.

Step 2 - Download Visual Studio

Next, download the Visual Studio bootstrapper file. To do so, click the following button, select the edition of Visual Studio 2017 that you want, click Save, and then click Open folder.

Watch a video on how to download the Visual Studio bootstrapper file and select the edition of Visual Studio that's right for you.

Step 3 - Install the Visual Studio installer

Then, run the bootstrapper file to install the Visual Studio Installer. This new lightweight installer includes everything you need to both install and customize Visual Studio 2017.

  1. From your Downloads folder, double-click the bootstrapper that matches or is similar to one of the following files:

    • vs_enterprise.exe for Visual Studio Enterprise
    • vs_professional.exe for Visual Studio Professional
    • vs_community.exe for Visual Studio Community

If you receive a User Account Control notice, click Yes.

  2. We'll ask you to acknowledge the Microsoft License Terms and the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Click Continue.

Step 4 - Select workloads

After the installer is installed, you can use it to customize your installation by selecting the feature sets—or workloads—that you want. Here's how.

  1. Find the workload you want in the Installing Visual Studio screen.

For example, choose the .NET desktop development workload. It comes with the default core editor, which includes basic code editing support for over 20 languages, the ability to open and edit code from any folder without requiring a project, and integrated source code control.

  2. After you select the workload(s) you want, click Install.

Next, status screens appear that show the progress of your Visual Studio installation.

  3. After the new workloads and components are installed, click Launch.

Tip

At any time after installation, you can install workloads or components that you didn't install initially. If you have Visual Studio open, go to Tools, Get Tools and Features... which opens the Visual Studio Installer. Or, open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu. From there, you can select the workloads or components that you wish to install, then click Modify.

Watch a video on how to install the Visual Studio Installer and then install a workload.

Step 5 - Select individual components (Optional)

If you don't want to use the Workloads feature to customize your Visual Studio installation, you can do so by installing individual components instead. To select individual components, click the Individual components option from the Visual Studio Installer, select what you want, and then follow the prompts.

Watch a video on how to install an individual component by using the Visual Studio Installer.

Step 6 - Install language packs (Optional)

By default, the installer program tries to match the language of the operating system when it runs for the first time. To install Visual Studio 2017 in a language of your choosing, click the Language packs option from the Visual Studio Installer, and follow the prompts.

Watch a video on how to install a language pack by using the Visual Studio Installer.

Change the installer language from the command line

Another way that you can change the default language is by running the installer from the command line. For example, you can force the installer to run in English by using the following command: vs_installer.exe --locale en-US. The installer will remember this setting when it is run the next time. The installer supports the following language tokens: zh-cn, zh-tw, cs-cz, en-us, es-es, fr-fr, de-de, it-it, ja-jp, ko-kr, pl-pl, pt-br, ru-ru, and tr-tr.

Step 7 - Start developing

  1. After Visual Studio installation is complete, click the Launch button to get started developing with Visual Studio.

  2. Click File, and then click New Project.

  3. Select a project type.

For example, to build a C++ app, click Installed, expand Visual C++, and then select the C++ project type that you want to build.

To build a C# app, click Installed, expand Visual C#, and then select the C# project type that you want to build.

Sometimes, things can go wrong. If your Visual Studio installation fails, see the Troubleshooting Visual Studio 2017 installation and upgrade issues page for troubleshooting tips.

What You Need to Know

Visual Studio 2017 is a full-featured Integrated Development Environment (IDE) from Microsoft. Find out what’s new and if it’s worth it to upgrade.

Visual Studio 2017 has been released and is now working its way to developers and organizations where it's being explored and evaluated. What is new, and what has been improved in this latest release? And more than that, is it worth the effort to upgrade to this latest version?

What is Visual Studio 2017?

Visual Studio 2017 is a full-featured Integrated Development Environment (IDE) from Microsoft. Originally an expensive product with limited functionality outside of developing on the Microsoft platform, later released have included low and no-cost entry points and an increased emphasis on cross-platform development.

MORE: Setting Up Visual Studio Code Tasks

When is it available?

Visual Studio 2017 hit general availability in March 2017 for Windows, and Visual Studio 2017 for Mac became available in May. Both are currently available now at visualstudio.com.

What are the different versions of Visual Studio 2017?

Visual Studio 2017 has even more editions than previous versions thanks to Microsoft's ongoing commitment to heterogeneous environments and open source. It comes in Enterprise, Team Services and Code flavors.

Like previous versions, Visual Studio 2017 is available in a fully-capable and free Community edition perfect for individual developers, a Professional edition with expanded feature sets that improve collaboration on small teams, and the Enterprise edition that is capable of helping manage code without boundaries regardless of the size of the organization.

New to Visual Studio 2017, and perhaps the most indicative of the Microsoft meeting their customers where they are now instead of forcing them onto their platform, is the release of Visual Studio for Mac. Visual Studio for Mac offers developers on the Apple platform some compelling features with an emphasis on cloud and mobile development.

Though it's not a fully integrated development experience, it's worth mentioning the open-source, cross-platform code editor that has joined the family of Microsoft's development tools. Visual Studio Code (VSCode) is a lightweight, customizable, and extendable code editor that runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. It provides a sleek interface, including Intellisense and syntax-based highlighting for dozens of current and popular languages. Like the Community edition of Visual Studio, VSCode is completely free.

What are the new features of Visual Studio 2017?

Visual Studio 2017 carries several new features, with many of them providing a tighter integration between the development experience and the process of getting the code from the developer's workstation and into a production environment.

Throughout the development experience, improvements are brought in that put these dev-ops functions just a button-push away. Some examples of this are the Team Explorer, which connects fluidly to Visual Studio Team Services, where your code can be stored and version controlled through either Subversion or Git. Once connected, cloning a repository is a one-step process, and if you connect from multiple machines, you'll find that it's easy to keep the code on your laptop and your workstation in sync.

Integrated build and deploy processes are similarly built in and simplified, with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment workflows practically automated to the point where they are effortless to setup.

Of the many new features that are present throughout the development lifecycle, two stand out as improvements worth a special mention. Live Unit Testing and Docker Support are both new features that are sure to impress.

Docker can be added to a development project as simply as checking a checkbox to add it. Just behind the scenes, libraries, code and developer artifacts are bundled and shipped as a Docker container and are ready to be shipped, removing the age-old "but it worked on my machine" excuse from the lexicon. Pulling back the curtain on the process of working with the Docker containers is very easy, as all of the commands that go into the process are shared with the developer, making it possible to learn more about Docker and how the whole containerization process works.

Live Unit Testing is an amazing feature where the code that is being unit tested is continuously being run against the code that you're modifying. If you make a code change that breaks the unit test, that is immediately noticeable by the big red "X" to the next of your code.  Fix the error and watch the unit code test change from the red X to a green checkmark and you can be assured that you're on the right path.

Are there improvements in the performance?

There are two ways to view performance.  The first is the actual speed of the software. The second is the performance increase as measured by the productivity of the developer. In each of these ways, performance in Visual Studio 2017 has made great improvements.

The actual speed of the IDE itself is much faster than previous versions, and it's a noticeable improvement from the time you start the upgrade. The installation is much faster than previous versions, and the installer is more customizable, with individual workflows such as Web, Office and Cloud development broken down into a menu of options so that you can pick and choose what you want to be installed. Performance boosts are seen throughout, and can even pop up when you are starting the application with a notice that one add-in or another is slowing your startup time.

But more than the overall application performance, the myriad of at-your-fingertip productivity improvements make the continued use of Visual Studio 2017 feel like you're developing a tool that knows what you're thinking and is ready to give you what you need as soon as you need it. Pop-up notices that your project could benefit from a particular add-on is just one example. Other examples are a more effective debugging process that lets you edit your layout while debugging, and an improved Intellisense interface that has filter buttons so you can choose whether properties, methods and events are displayed.

Is it worth it to upgrade to Visual Studio 2017?

It's worth it to upgrade to Visual Studio 2017, especially if you're an individual developer or working on a small team.

For Enterprise Edition customers and larger organizations, extra consideration should be given to make sure that people are upgrading together or over a short period of time when all of the groups can upgrade together so that people aren't developing with different tools on different teams.

Differences between Visual Studio 2017 Community and Professional editions

In the last weeks and months, I am seeing a lot of confusion and doubts in the forums and with the clients of my company about which Visual Studio edition can be used, which are the functionalities and what differentiates the Community edition from the Professional edition.

If we go back many years ago:

  • Visual Studio .NET 2002 / 2003 was initially a paid product in all their editions.
  • In Visual Studio 2005, Microsoft released the “Standard” and “Professional” editions, introducing also the “Express” edition, which was a limited free edition intended for neophytes, hobbyists, newbies and the like. The Visual Studio 2005 Express edition had flavors: Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition, Visual C# Express Edition, Visual J# Express Edition and Visual Web Dev Express Edition.
  • Visual Studio 2008, 2010 and 2012 followed suit offering flavored Express editions, which legally could be used within companies, but were severely limited for a professional use. For example, they didn’t allow extensions (add-ins, packages, etc.).
  • Visual Studio 2013 also offered flavored Express editions, but it introduced a new “Community” edition, which was intended for professional use and removed many limitations of the Express editions. For example, it allowed extensions.
  • Visual Studio 2015 also offered the Community edition while preserving the Express 2015 for Windows Desktop, Express 2015 for Web and Express 2015 for Windows 10.
  • Visual Studio 2017, at the time of this writing, doesn’t offer Express editions, only the Community edition.

So, if you want to use Visual Studio 2017, your only choices are the Enterprise edition, the Professional edition and the Community edition. And the most common question is: which are the differences between the Professional and the Community edition? Likely you may have also read that the Community edition is almost identical to the Professional edition, so, why to pay for the Professional edition?

There are two aspects that you need to consider: the legal aspect and the technical aspect.

From the legal point of view, Visual Studio 2017 Community edition is free (it requires registration with a Microsoft account, though) but the license doesn’t allow you to use it in all scenarios. The legal document for your lawyer is here:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition License Terms

which in short specifies this:

  • If you are an individual (you don’t belong to an organization), you can use the Community edition to develop and test applications, even applications that you sell.
  • If you belong to an organization, then there are two cases: your organization is a “non-enterprise” organization, or it is an “enterprise” organization.

An “enterprise” is any organization and its affiliates who collectively have either:

(a) more than 250 PCs or users

or

(b) one million U.S. dollars (or the equivalent in other currencies) in annual revenues

“Affiliates” means those entities that control (via majority ownership), are controlled by, or are under common control with an organization.

  • If your organization qualifies as “non-enterprise” organization, then up to 5 developers can use the Community edition. The 6th developer would have to pay for a Professional edition.
  • If your organization qualifies as an “enterprise” organization, then:
    • Any number of users can use Community edition to develop and test applications in the following scenarios: classroom training and education, academic research, Visual Studio extensions projects or open source projects.
    • No user at all can use the Community edition if it is not for classroom training and education, academic research, Visual Studio extensions projects or open source projects. This is an important difference with the Express editions, which, for example, allowed a single system administrator in a large organization to use legally the Express edition to create scripts. In this scenario, she cannot use legally the Community edition, even if she would be the only user of Visual Studio within the enterprise organization.

From the technical point of view, the resource to be read by you or your team lead is the following:

Compare Visual Studio 2017 IDEs

If you compare row by row the columns “Visual Studio Community” and “Visual Studio Professional” you will find only two differences:

  • “Enterprise” is a supported usage scenario for the “Professional” edition, but not for the “Community” edition.
  • The Professional edition supports “CodeLens”, while the “Community” edition doesn’t. If this feature is important for you, either pay for the Professional edition or vote the CodeLens for Community Edition suggestion on UserVoice. There are also reports that installing SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) brings CodeLens to the Community edition, at least for Visual Studio 2015.

Visual Studio 2017 Introduction:

Visual Studio 2017 recently released by Microsoft in mid of November 2016 and came with new and exciting features and legacy that Visual Studio earned in past years of ruling Microsoft focused technologies like .Net and ASP.Net while installation of Visual Studio has more improvements in choice of choosing different kinds of technologies. Visual Studio 2017 released in 3 main editions that are released to target various kind of users to code efficiently. VS 2017 released in Visual Studio Community 2017, Visual Studio Professional 2017, and Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 editions. Visual Studio 2017 Community is an “express edition form” of Visual Studio that is totally free of cost and released in the name of Community instead of Express since Visual Studio 2015. After Visual Studio 2015, in the release of Visual Studio 15(basically Visual Studio 2016) Community edition is also continued. The professional edition of Visual Studio 2017 is basically for a professional developer or a small team of Professional developers working on a certain type of Project and one of the most used edition of Visual Studio. While Enterprise edition of Visual Studio 2017 is an end to end solution for large level projects and for a large organization as well as for one large or multiple small teams working on a single Enterprise level project.

You can also download Visual Studio 2017 Professional

You can also download Visual Studio 2017 Community

Visual Studio 2017 has improvements, features and bug fixes that will save your time and effort and will enhance your code navigation, refactoring, Intellisense, debugging and code fixes. It has brand new features like live unit testing and real-time architectural dependency validation that will streamline your inner loop and speeds up code flow thus enhancing your and your team’s professional skills. Visual Studio 2017 has installation feature of picking development technologies on the basis of what you need not what Microsoft provides. So for Windows developers, there are broad toolsets like Universal Windows Platform development, dot Net desktop development, and Windows Desktop development. For Web and Cloud developers Visual Studio 2017 provides Web Development, Python Development, Azure Development, Node.js development, Data Science and analytical applications, Office or Sharepoint development toolsets are available according to user’s respective editions. Mobile and gaming development toolsets include Mobile Development with .Net, Mobile Development with JavaScript, Mobile Development with C++, Game Development with C++and Game Development with Unity. This time Visual Studio 2017 released as Release candidate. It has come with 3 different editions Visual Studio Professional 2017 RC, Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 RC and Visual Studio Community 2017 RC.

You can also download Visual Studio 15

While other toolsets include Visual studio extension development and Linux development with C++ could be the options for developers. New improvements of Visual Studio 2017 includes new installation experience that will reduce the time of installation of Visual Studio 2017 and will let you install tools inside the broad category of development technology and will make you able to install specific tools from a whole toolset of single or multiple technologies. In previous Visual Studio the installation will be experienced slow as there you have to install the whole setup of Visual Studio or you have to install a single technology that had multiple toolsets thus making installation a bit slower. In the case of installing the whole setup, there were setups and technologies that weren’t so broad but installing whole setup and bunch of technologies is now an aged approach. Previously if you install a full installation of a setup of Visual Studio or any other large size creative software, uninstallation of that program mostly resulted in the error and incomplete uninstallation e.g Visual Studio 2012 installation and uninstallation initially resulted in buggy installation on certain versions of Windows later fixed by patches and updates by Microsoft. But here in Visual Studio you could easily install and uninstall the whole setup of toolsets or a particular number of toolsets, they will be removed easily and without errors.

Visual Studio 2017 Create Offline Installer:

Microsoft didn’t officially release an ISO file or offline installer of Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 for Professional, Enterprise or Community editions. However, in their blog they mentioned the technique to doing that. Download the Visual Studio 2017 from the below-provided download link. Then run the Exe file with the arguments from the command prompt. An example is provided below.

start D:\vs2017\vs_professional.exe -layout C:\vs2017 -lang en-US
